What's Going On Now
Ink Jet Cartridge Recycling Program Is Up and Running!
Send in your empty ink jet and laser printer cartridges for recycling and help support the Fine
Arts Dept. Please send in original cartridges, not remanufactured ones, if possible. There are
boxes located outside of the Front Office, in the SCRIP Store and in the Band Room or send
them in with your Band or Choir student. Each cartridge brings in money that goes to BSHARP
Goals (See Goals tab).
Magazine Sale was a Success!
This year's Magazine Sale is going on. Each group that participated (i.e., Band, Choir, and
Color Guard) will receive the amount that each group earned to put toward their goals. Many
thanks goes to all the students who worked hard to support this important fund raiser. Thank
you to all of the parents, families, friends and neighbors who supported our efforts to raise
money for our Fine Arts Dept.
Band Retreat was Memorable!
There were many wonderful memories that made this retreat special. This year's senior class
has a lot of heart and it came through over the weekend. From Saturday night reflections to
senior memories, they showed a maturity and grace that was unique to their class. Lots of fun
memories were made from all the activities throughout the weekend.
Band Olympics had everyone laughing. Everyone joined in on the tug-of-war, three-legged
races and piggy-back rides. The horseback riding, rope obstacle course and rock wall were a
blast! And, who could forget (and I'm sure the students would like to forget) the large group of
chaperones who were a part of the wake-up crew every morning singing to the likes of "In the
Mood" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo." Thanks, Mr. Paynton, It was a fun weekend!
Open House was highlighted by our own JFK Marching Band.
Our own JFK Marching Band was a part of the opening ceremonies of Open House this year
The "Sea of Blue" marched in--132 members strong--to play a number of songs including the
JFK Fight Song. The Band sounded and looked great as they played to a full house of parents
in the gym. Open House was once again, an informative and well organized night. The parents
enjoyed meeting all their students' teachers and appreciated the effort they make every day
getting to their classes on time.
New Cabinets have been installed and new Bells are being played!
Thanks to our anonymous BSHARP family who donated seven new music cabinets and three
Marching Band bells. The cabinets were installed by Mark DeFaccio, BSHARP
Vice-President, who spent many of his own hours putting them all together. Thank you, Mark!
The cabinets house all of the thousands of music sheets that our students use on a daily basis.
Ryan DeFaccio (Class of 2005) and many other Band students helped organize the sheet
music for the new cabinets. Thank you for "giving back" to your band program! The three bells
that are being used for the Marching Band look and sound great, too!
Volunteers Needed for the SCRIP.
We need volunteers to help work the SCRIP. You are welcome to work as little as once a
month or as often as you'd like. Contact MaryONichols@hotmail.com for more information.

February, 2006 Winter Band Retreat was a blast!
This year's winter band retreat was at a new location with Happy Trails. It was located at the
Double K Christian Retreat Center in Easton, WA. The students were met with horse drawn
sleigh's that took them through the woods to a new sledding hill that offered a larger area to
sled. Everyone had a great time including Mr. Lequire and Mr. Paynton who went sledding all
day with the students. Mr. Lequire had the longest run of anyone going well beyond the normal
length the innertubes would travel. The chaperones presented a nourishing lunch of chicken
noodle soup and hot dogs that were cooked on the open fire.
2005 Christmas Concert was wonderful!
Congratulations to all the students, Ms. Milasich and Mr. Paynton for a wonderful performance in
front of a sold out audience! The choir's skit of "The Night Before Christmas" was a classic,
and the Orchestra's music was Heaven sent! A big thanks to Mady McWhirt and the Color
Guard for serving cookies and drinks during intermission and all the volunteers selling SCRIP,
CD's and BSHARP Wear.
2005 Magazine Sale breaks last year's record!
Thank you to everyone who supported our 2005 Magazine Sale this year! Our sales have topped last
year's sales which is very exciting! This year we are dividing up the proceeds between the Choir and
the Band Program according to the sales they acquired for each department. This will give Choir and
Band the funds they need to achieve their individual goals.
2005 Band Retreat was filled with wonderful memories!
Band Retreat was held at the Sambica Retreat Center on beautiful Lake Sammamish in Issaquah this
year. This year the students participated in the Band Olympics that included Red Rover, Tug-of-War,
Three-legged Races and something to do with putting your head on a bat and walking around in circles
and then trying to run and catch a football--it was hilarious. It was all fun and the students and
chaperones had a great time! We had 140 people that included students and chaperones. Special
time was given on Saturday night in the tradition of the retreat with reflections around the fireplace.
Many thanks and feelings of appreciation for the Band Program that Mr. Paynton has created over the
years were given. It was truly a memorable weekend!
BSHARP Board Meets another Major Goal!
The September 25 Board meeting was held at the Lewis family home. It began with a scrumptous
potluck dinner before the meeting. The new Board worked on establishing a new Mission Statement for
BSHARP that will be finalized at the next meeting. It included the Board's focus on supporting the Fine
Arts Dept. with financial support as well as staffing for all the Fine Arts Dept. disciplines. In addition, it
will include promoting "an appreciation of the fine arts and developing our faith community that will
anchor our students self-esteem and love of life."
The Board unanimously voted to pay the JFK Administration $10K loan off in full. The loan was due
October 1, 2005. The BSHARP Board and its membership have been working on paying this loan off for
the last year. Through the help of Parent Club and Booster Club donations, individual and family
donations, and the many hours of volunteer work with our various fundraising efforts, we were able to
accomplish this major task.
Mr. Paynton and Ann Corbett presented Paul Poginy with a $10K check from BSHARP on Thursday,
September 29. This was a great accomplishment for BSHARP who can now move forward to work on
Mr. Paynton's new 2005-06 Short- and Long-Term Goals (Please see "Goals" on our website).
The New Used Book Store is Open! (See Store hours below)
BSHARP and Parent Club took on the task of implementing the buy-back and purchase of used
textbooks at the end of the 2005 school year. Getting our feet wet with this new program has had many
rewards and challenges. Goals for this inaugural program that were met included: making the waiting
lines shorter, building community through volunteers working in partnership and providing text books at
a reasonable cost.
A hearty thank-you to the multitude of students, parents, guardians, teachers and administrative staff
who helped with the NEW used book return and sales this past June and August. You know who you
are!
As the dust settles, we'll be evaluating what went well and what we can do better next year. Watch the
Communi-K next spring for dates and times for next year's program!
Used Book Store/SCRIP Store hours for the first week of school ONLY:
Monday, August 29: 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Tuesday, August 30: 12:00-1:00 p.m.
Wednesday, August 31: 11:30-12:30 p.m.

Wenatchee Apple Blossom Parade was a memorable event!
Our JFK Band "looked like a million dollars" as they marched in the parade on Saturday, May 7 in
Wenatchee. It was a memorable day to see the Band in their sharp, crisp new uniforms march down the
streets of Wenatchee as they played Sousa's Washington Post March and King Cotton. Many of our
JFK Band parents and families, JFK alumni and friends took the drive over the mountains to Wenatchee
to see the first parade with the new uniforms.
Thank you to all the Band students and Mr. Paynton for all their hard work preparing for the parade!
You did us proud!
June Board Meeting welcomes new Board members!
The BSHARP Board meeting was held at the Ohlstrom family home on June 5.
The Board voted in five new Board members to replace the members who were graduating this year with
their seniors or their time was met. Special thanks goes to these outgoing members who were there
from the beginning when the new Board format was established last year. We truly appreciate the time
you generously gave to BSHARP this year to make this one of our most productive years. Thank you
goes out to: Tina Geisbers, Kathleen and John Marth, Cynthia Mealy, and Mark Ohlstrom.
We welcome our new members that were inducted for the 2005-2006 school year: Mark DeFaccio
(Parade and Bus Equipment Coordinator), LIndsey Milashich (Choir Instructor and Choir
Representative), Mady McWhirt (Color Guard Representative, Bake Sale Coordinator), Liz Setran
(Treasurer), and Cindy Wolf (E-mail Coordinator).
The Board discussed several issues that included the Used Book Sale which was a new venture with the
Parent Club. As you know, JFK decided not to continue with their Used Book Sale program and offered
it to BSHARP and the Parent Club to organize. BSHARP recognizes that this is an important program to
have continue at JFK and we agreed to organize it with Parent Club to offer our JFK parents a chance to
sell back their school books and purchase used books at a reduced cost for next year. The sale has
been a success and will have a second book sale on August 8 in the JFK Cafeteria from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00
p.m. Since this was a new fundraiser this year for BSHARP, we realized that many lessons will be
learned as we do this for the first time and we thank everyone for their patience.
SCRIP will be our main focus for fundraising this coming year as we will coming up with plans to bring it
to the next level. SCRIP, itself, is taking on a new format and we will keep you all updated on the
changes in the next few weeks and months. Any questions, please contact Mary Nichols, 206.246.6888.
Dream Sheets are now available!
A new tool was introduced at the April BSHARP Board meeting that will help the Board on new ideas
presented by a BSHARP member. The new Dream Sheets will included all the necessary information
needed for decribing the idea or fundraiser, et al. It includes the Who, What, When and Where plus
How much will it cost, Expected Earnings (if it's a fundraiser, for instance), et al. We welcome your gifts
and ideas to BSHARP! Contact Mr. Paynton or Ann Corbett, BSHARP President, for a Dream Sheet and
start dreaming!
A look back at this past school year . . . and what a year
it's been!
Santa Claus makes an early stop at the Christmas Concert!
The 2004 Christmas Concert was a great success and had an early Christmas present for the Band as
well. Many thanks goes to our wonderful Directors and Instructors, Mr. Jim Paynton, Band Director;
Ms. Lindsay Milasich, Choir Director; and, Percussion Instructor, Mr. Ryan Dignan for a captivating and
diverse range of material, and congratulations to the troupe of elegan Kennedy musicians for a
seamless performance! From the intricate harmonies of John Rutter (Excalibur Choir), the classic and
haunting
Ave Maria (Kennedy Singers) to the hugely entertaining and comical "Fruitcake" presented by the
Troubadors, the choral program was challenging for its performers and greatly enjoyed by the audience.
Enter Percussion Ensemble, who beat and choreographed their way around the stage in a frenzy of
crowd-pleasing entertainment. Getting down to the rhythmic core of life, these students used floor and
plastic pails for instruments, punctuated by punchy brass riffs by some multi-talented players, switching
from sticks to brass and back again. They brought the house down!
The finale, Russian Christmas music by Reed, was a powerful and polyphonic rendition depicting the
vastness, depth and majesty of Russia, with a vast, deep and majestic Symphonic Band. The richness
of tones and diverse instrumentation, including percussion and bells, was a fitting end to a feast of
wonderful music.
However, the drama wasn't quite over. Santa Claus was about to arrive with a special gift to the Band
students. As Gilbert Heerhartz and Aaron Walsh, our Drum Majors, came forward to read a message
from Santa, the surprise announcement that the matching $20K grant donation had been received
which enabled the purchase of 140 new marching band uniforms to be ordered and delivered by
mid-April, 2005 made the crowd erupt in screams of delight from the students and deafening applause in
the house!
It was a memorable night indeed!
The evening concluded with Great Songs of Christmas, as the band played, the audience sang along,
and, flanked on either side of the hall by the combined singers, Christmas favorites filled the hall.
Christmas, 2004, will always be remembered in hearts and in our minds!
Thank you to the anonymous donor(s) who generously gave from their hearts to make this a reality
for our JFK Band Students; to our former BSHARP President, Mr. Jim Brophy, who gave us his support
with the donor(s); to Mr. Mike Prato, JFK Principal, and Mr. Paul Poginy, JFK Business Director, for their
unending support of our program; to our wonderful Band Director, Mr. Jim Paynton, for believing this
could happen and our wonderful Board of Directors who joined in prayer and gave their support as the
events unfolded leading up to the announcement at the concert. Merry Christmas and thank you all for
giving of yourselves to the Band students. You are all truly a blessing to the Band Program!
A special thank you goes to our JFK Color Guard who helped sell at the Bake Sale for the concert.
They were there to support their Band friends and families and we truly appreciate you! Thanks!
Please Note: Thank you to our Publicity Co-Coordinator, Bron Edwards Cryer, for helping write the
concert review above.
BSHARP came to the Arts & Craft Fair!
Thank you to all of our BSHARP volunteers who worked the BSHARP table selling SCRIP, BSHARP
Wear and Bron Edwards Cryer's CD's, our Publicity Co-Coordinator, who donated a portion of her CD
sales to the Band Program. Thank you goes to the Parent Club for allowing us to set up a table at the
fair to continue our work toward raising money for our new marching band uniforms.
Mr. Paynton's Short-Term Goals have been met--purchased, delivered and assembled!
This was a BIG day for the Band program!
The Short-Term Goals that have been outlined by Mr. Paynton since the Spring of 2004, we're
purchased and delivered to the students the week before Thanksgiving. What a Thanksgiving it was!
On Tuesday evening, November 23, several of our BSHARP parents and Mr. Paynton assembled all
60 music stands and the two stand racks that BSHARP purchased for the Band and Choir Students.
Mr. Paynton surprised all the students the next day when they came in to pick up their stands to begin
practicing! They were very excited and happy to see their new music stands!
The Board really stepped up to the plate to approve this expenditure and it was well worth it! Our
Director and students deserve to have good, reliable equipment and we are truly grateful to our
BSHARP parents who worked so hard to donate and raise the money to make this happen! Thank you
so much!
The following list of equipment was purchased for Mr. Paynton and the students:
60 Music Stands + 2 Music Stand Racks = $1917.40 + tax
1-Impact Trap Case (hard-sided drum kit case on wheels) = $316.00 + tax
Total: $2429.94
The following equipment was graciously and generously donated by our own Percussion Instructor,
Ryan Dignan:
Percussion Hardware (Est. cost $600) Thank you Ryan for your generous gift to the students!
Ink Jet Cartridge Recycling Program goes School-wide!
Our Ink Jet program kicked off on Monday, December 13. The boxes have arrived and were delivered
to the each Homeroom, the school office, the SCRIP Store and the Computer Lab on Friday, December
10. Katie Corbett, Band Council President, spoke at the ASB Assembly on Friday, December 10 to all
the Faculty, Staff and students to explain the Ink Jet and SCRIP programs.
Mr. Prato gave BSHARP approval to implement our Ink Jet Cartridge Recycling Program into the school.
Boxes will be delivered to the all the homerooms and we will be inviting the faculty, staff and JFK
students to help collect spent ink jet and copier cartridges from their places of work and homes and
donate them to our recycling program. Each month, we box the spent cartridges up and mail them in to
our recycling company which mails us a check in return! Thank you Mr. Prato for your continued
support of our Band Program!
Please coordinate with your office at work and home and send in your spent cartridges to help us raise
money for our new marching band uniforms! Questions? Call our Ink Jet Co-Coordinators,
Terry-Jo Lewis, 206.241.8490 or Michele Rogan, 253.856.3742.
The Magazine Sale was a success!
Our Magazine Sale this year was a huge success! The final numbers from Quality Promotions have not
come in yet, but our preliminary estimates look like we've exceeded last year's profits! Thank you to all
our Band students, their families, neighbors, relatives, et al who helped support this important
fundraiser! We truly appreciate your efforts! When we receive the final profit numbers, you will see
them posted here. Thanks, again!
Band Retreat was a blast!
The weekend of October 22-23, the Band and Color Guard enjoyed a fun-filled weekend at Miracle
Ranch in Port Orchard. The students got a chance to participate in a good 'ole fashion rodeo on
Saturday which might have been the first time that many of them had ever been on a horse! They
competed against each other in the barrel-rolling contest (and they were the ones rolling in the barrel!),
riding western style toward a goal and heading back to the finish line in a sack race and racing against
the clock to tie up a goat's tail! Good friends were made this weekend! Everyone can't wait until next
year's retreat!
SCRIP Program goes School-wide and gets $10K loan from JFK!
We received approval from the JFK administration that our SCRIP program can be sold school-wide!
In addition, BSHARP has received a $10K loan from JFK to purchase SCRIP product to sell.
Thank you Mr. Paynton, Mr. Prato and Mr. Poginy for making this happen!
On-site sales will be Monday mornings from 7:30-8:30 a.m., Monday afternoons from 2:00-3:00 p.m. and
Friday afternoons from 2:00-3:00 p.m. You may send your order into school in the a.m. with your
student and they can pick your order up after school in the Home Ec. Room. Please note: You will need
to authorize your student to be able to pick up the order after school by signing your SCRIP form.
Larger orders will be taken on a bi-weekly basis. Please see the SCRIP Info. button above for the order
and pick-up dates and the SCRIP Form button above to print the order form.
Remember! We can't do this without your help! We will need our Band and Choir parents to volunteer
to be a part of our core group of volunteers to help sell SCRIP. Please contact Teri Crosswhite,
206.431.9843, or Mary Nichols, 206.246.6888, to sign up and help! We are thrilled to be able to offer
SCRIP school wide and to raise the money we need to replace our marching band uniforms.
Thanks to Teri and Mary for their dedication to the Band program!
Long-Term Goals
Look on our new Goals website page and see the long-term goals that Mr. Paynton has established.
Please note the short-term goals have recently been met at the 10/9/04 Board meeting. These goals
will help BSHARP prioritize our efforts for the coming school year. Thanks, Mr. Paynton!
New BSHARP Brochure
A new BSHARP brochure was designed that was handed out at the Freshmen BBQ and was well
received. It helps outline the Band Program, shows the activities the students can participate in and
gives information on BSHARP. It can be used for a marketing tool when we make our Corporate and
local business contacts.
New BSHARP Calendar
We now have a BSHARP calendar that is ready to be published. If you are on our BSHARP E-mail list,
you will be receiving a BSHARP General Membership E-mail that will have a full school-year calendar
attached. If you're not and would like to be on our BSHARP E-mail list, please contact our E-mail
Coordinator, Kathleen Marth.
The calendar was created on Word, so the majority of our membership would be able to open it.
However, trying to get the full school year calendar on our new website has been a challenge. The
October calendar has been established for now. Keep an eye out for the new November calendar which
will be published at the end of October. We will continue to work on trying to get the entire calendar on
the website.
Fun News!
New BSHARP Logo
Check out our new BSHARP logo! At the July 1st Board meeting, Ann Corbett suggested a new
BSHARP logo be created. Ann contacted our own JFK Band student and artist, Matt Davis, over the
summer to create a couple of ideas that were submitted to the Board for a vote. The winning logo was
the BSHARP Marching Legs logo! Thanks Matt for the great logo!
New BSHARP Wear
At the July 1st Board Meeting, it was voted upon that we would indeed look into having polo shirts and
hats for everyone. The parents who marched in the Wenatchee Parade last spring asked for baseball
hats to shade them from the sun, so hats were ordered! The color for the polo shirts was overwhelming
. . . Red! The hats are navy blue and are adjustable. Bids were taken and our own local Burien
Competitive Edge was chosen to make up the shirts and hats. The logo was digitized and made ready
for the embroider. The samples have been approved and they are being created as the author is writing
this update for you! They will be ready for purchase and pick-up on Monday, September 27th.
Print off the BSHARP Wear Order Form on this website and send it in with your money to Mr. Paynton or
contact Ann Corbett at one of the football games or call her at 425.432.1304 to make arrangements.
